Explosions were heard in the Syrian port city of Latakia overnight Monday, the Syrian news agency reported.

According to the report, a fire broke out in the area.

Official media outlets in Syria claimed that the explosions and fire were a result of an air strike carried out by Israel.

The reports also indicated that Syrian air defenses responded to the "Israeli aggression" and intercepted most of the missiles.

A military source told Syria’s official SANA news agency that at around 1:23 a.m., "the Israeli enemy carried out an air strike."

According to the source, a number of missiles were fired from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of Latakia, and the attack targeted a lot with containers in the commercial port of Latakia.

About two weeks ago, Syrian media reported that Israel carried out an air strike in the vicinity of the city of Homs.

Syria's official news agency, SANA, reported that the country’s air defense systems were activated following the Israeli attack and intercepted most of the missiles.

A military source in Syria said four Syrian soldiers were wounded in the attack and that it caused material damage.

Syrian state television reported that two civilians were killed and another civilian was injured in the air strike.

A week earlier, Syrian media reported that Israel attacked an empty building south of the capital, Damascus.

According to the report, Israel launched two missiles from the direction of the Golan Heights, and one of them was shot down. No injuries were reported.
