After a threat was called in to a high school in Baltimore County, police said they determined it was not credible.
While officers were investigating, they said three schools in the Essex area were placed on "lockout" status.
A lockout is used during a community emergency outside the school building, according to police, who say it is a less serious measure than a lockdown. All doors are locked from the inside, and nobody is allowed to leave or enter the building without permission. Those going in must provide identification to staff, posted at the front door. Outdoor activities are suspended during a lockout, while activities inside proceed as usual.
By 11:20 a.m., police reported the threat was deemed not credible.
It came the day after three people were killed and eight were injured in a school shooting in Oxford, Michigan.
