A Baltimore County police officer was injured Tuesday night while attempting to make a traffic stop in Pikesville.

According to police, just after 5:30 p.m., an officer attempted to make a traffic stop in the 6900 block of Blanche Road for a motor vehicle violation.

The driver failed to comply and tried to leave, smashing into a squad car multiple times while one officer was inside, police said.

Police said as the squad car was being rammed, another officer discharged his weapon. The number of times the officer fired is under investigation.

The suspect surrendered to police after the officer fired his weapon.

Noone was hit by the gunfire.

"This is a perfect example of how you hear people say 'a routine traffic stop.' This was anything but routine when you think of what that might look like. This person was not complying. He was trying to flee the scene, and in the process put the lives of several officers in danger," said Joy Stewart, of the Baltimore County Police Department.

The officer inside the car was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
