U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stopped in Baltimore Tuesday alongside state and city leaders to announce a $22 million grant for the city's East-West Priority Corridor project.

The corridor runs 10 miles through Baltimore City from the east to west sides of Baltimore County.

Officials said the project will create jobs and enhance access and mobility to essential services, jobs and schools.

"The point of transportation is to connect people, not to disconnect people," Buttigieg said. "Now, we have an opportunity to do something about that, in no small part thanks to the leadership of Senate leaders like Sens. (Chris) Van Hollen and (Ben) Cardin, who've spoken about this issue."

The Maryland Department of Transportation and the city of Baltimore estimate the project will expand transit access to more than 180,000 jobs along the corridor.
