Israel's military bases have long been targeted for weapons and ammunition supplies
Israel's armed forces updated its rules of engagement on Sunday, granting permission for soldiers to use live fire against suspected thieves on military bases.
Although previously soldiers could only open fire if there was an immediate danger posed to their lives, this change allows troops to use deadly force on suspected smugglers, thieves seizing weapons from facilities, or intruders breaking into bases and firing ranges.
"Rules of engagement are coordinated with an up-to-date assessment of the situation and operational challenges," a military statement detailed.
"In recent weeks, the IDF has been working to implement the changes, to include the necessary changes into relevant training programs, so that soldiers will be briefed on their bases from now on with up-to-date orders in accordance with their operational region."
The changes were approved by Israel's military Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi.
Israel's military bases have long been targeted for weapons and ammunition supplies, although numbers recently declined.
