Researchers at Tel Hashomer and the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute at West Virginia University are pioneering a technique to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier in the brain’s blood vessels, which generally makes it difficult to deliver antibodies and medications to the brain.
“For the past five years, we have been working together using ultrasound waves to treat tremor, whether produced by Parkinson or by other causes,” said Dr. Ali Rezai of the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. “The patient comes to the clinic, wears a helmet that delivers the waves to their brain, and then goes home in two hours.”
The researchers are using the technique to combat other brain diseases, including Alzheimer’s and brain tumors, and will hopefully receive full approval for the therapies within a few years.
