Israel is well known for the country’s thriving high tech sector
A startup in Israel is looking to assist in the fight against climate change using an unconventional tool - balloons.
The innovation firm, High Hopes Labs, aims to send balloons into the atmosphere and capture carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas that is one of the biggest drivers behind shifts in the globe’s climate.
While removing CO2 directly is usually a costly endeavor, the startup came up with a unique solution.
“The beautiful thing is that capturing gas is very easy when it's close to freezing," CEO Nadav Mansdorf explained.
High in the atmosphere, at cooler temperatures, the greenhouse gas is captured in an almost-solid form.
The frozen gas then returns to earth, where it can be recycled.
The company already ran tests of the initiative on a small scale, using balloons with boxes designed to capture CO2 attached.
Israel is well known for the country’s thriving high tech sector, and officials are looking to leverage this innovation power to fight environmental concerns.
