Around 250 Palestinian prisoners, detained for crimes affiliated with Islamic Jihad, will begin a hunger strike on Wednesday.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club, as reported by The Times of Israel (ToI), announced that they are protesting Israel’s new policies toward Palestinian detainees.

The new practices include breaking up groups of Islamic Jihad prisoners, moving some to other prisons or solitary confinement, and postponing family visits, ToI reported.

Following the escape of six Palestinian inmates from Gilboa prison in early September, Israeli wardens took several measures to reduce chances of another jailbreak.

“There is only one demand: return the situation to the way it was before [the escape],” Prisoners Club director Qaddura Fares said in a phone call with ToI.

An Israel Prison Services spokesperson said prison officials have yet to see a formal hunger strike commence.

Normally the prisoners would send a letter to the prison administration announcing their intention to begin such a protest.
