Baltimore, MD - July 1, 2021 - We wanted to take this opportunity to announce a very welcome addition to our staff at Sol Levinson Funeral Home. We are excited to report that Shlomo Horowitz, the Chevra Kadisha Director of the Agudath Israel of Baltimore, will now also serve as Levinson’s Advisor on Halachic Funeral and Burial Customs. In his new role, Mr. Horowitz will act as a liason to the observant community and the funeral home to ensure families and their deceased loved ones are being served with the utmost respect and all halachic needs are met.

Additionally, Mr. Horowitz will be available to accompany our staff when transferring the deceased from the place of death, be available to guide families who have questions specific to our traditional requirements, advise Levinson’s leadership and Funeral Directors on religious matters, and attend funeral services and burials with Levinson’s licensed staff.

As part of Baltimore’s Jewish community for over 130 years, we continue to strive to meet the needs of our growing community and we feel the addition of Mr. Horowitz to our team will greatly serve to enhance our ongoing goal to serve the Jewish families of Baltimore and beyond to its fullest.

Separately, but on a related note, we are actively recruiting for two positions for Shomer Shabbos individuals, a Funeral Assistant and overnight Shomer. If you have anyone in mind who you think would be suitable for one of these positions, please feel free to pass the word along or let us know and we can reach out to them. We may be reached at 410.653.8900

Shlomo Horowitz Bio

Shlomo Horowitz has been working with Baltimore’s Chevra Kadisha for over 20 years. Along with his continued work with the Chevra Kadisha, Mr. Horowitz works with Sol Levinson & Bros. as our Advisor on Halachic Funeral and Burial Customs, acting as a liaison to the Observant community and the funeral home in order to ensure that the highest halachic standards for each deceased are met and maintained. Mr. Horowitz accompanies our staff when transferring deceased individuals from their place of death and provides guidance to families who have questions specific to their religious requirements.

Raised in Scranton, PA., Mr. Horowitz moved to Baltimore in 1986 in order to study at Ner Israel Rabbinical College. He remained at Ner Israel until 1994, at which time he began, Syata Kitchens, which he still owns and operates.

As President of the Agudath Israel of Baltimore, Mr. Horowitz was interested in working on the relationship between the Shul and the cemetery. With a deep belief in the importance of communal volunteer work, Mr. Horowitz felt that working with the Chevra Kadisha would be a great way to give back to his community. HaRav Moshe Heinemann, a mentor to many including Mr. Horowitz, was the guiding force behind Baltimore’s Chevra Kadisha. Working with Mr. Joseph Nelkin, z’l, who lead the Chevra Kadisha for as long as he was physically able to do so, Mr. Horowitz served as his right hand for many years. Along with the guidance from Mr. Nelkin, participation with Baltimore’s Chevra Kadisha was a natural fit for Mr. Horowitz because his mother served for many years with the women’s Chevra in Scranton and his father served as a cemetery trustee for the shul which his pulpit belonged to.

Mr. Horowitz’s continued drive to serve our community blends perfectly with Sol Levinson & Bros. goal to meet the dynamic and changing needs of Baltimore’s Jewish community and beyond.
