Iranian drones could reach targets over 4,000 miles away - Guards commander says

Iran and regional forces it backs have increasingly relied on drones in Yemen, Syria, Iraq in recent years.

Iranian military drones have a range of more than 4,000 miles, the country’s media reported, citing the commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami.

The revelation comes as Tehran is deep in negotiations that may see it returning to a 2015 nuclear deal that former President Donald Trump withdrew the US from, while slapping sanctions on Iran. 

Western military analysts say Iran is known to occasionally exaggerate its capabilities, but it is a strong player in the use of drones, leveraging the capability to surveil the key oil supply route through the Strait of Hormuz, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Iran, and its proxy allies in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and the Gaza Strip are increasingly making use of drones.

"We have unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) with long range of 7,000 kilometers. They can fly, return home, and make landing wherever they are planned to," Salami was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.
