Israel: Yesh Atid, Meretz Parties Reach Coalition Agreement

With just one more week for Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid to form a government, his centrist Yesh Atid party struck a coalition deal overnight with the left-wing Meretz party.

Lapid’s mandate expires on June 2 after which the Knesset has 21 days to form a government or Israel will head to a fifth round of elections in less than three years.

Despite inking deals with Meretz and Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu party, Lapid needs the support of Naftali Bennett’s Yamina party, but Bennett two weeks ago nixed the idea of joining a unity government that includes the left, citing increased tensions between Jews and Arabs within Israel.
