Biden's pick for undersecretary of defense for policy targeted for role in Iran deal

The US Senate on Tuesday confirmed President Joe Biden's nominee for undersecretary of defense for policy despite some pro-Israel groups targeting Colin Kahl for his role in shaping the 2015 Iran nuclear accord.

The vote was 49-45 along party lines for Kahl to assume the third highest-ranking civilian role at the Pentagon.

Two right-leaning pro-Israel groups vocally opposed Kahl's nomination. Christians United for Israel (CUFI) and the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) advocated for the Senate to reject Kahl based on his role in shaping the Iran deal during his time as national security adviser to then-Vice President Biden. 

CUFI launched a newspaper ad campaign in West Virginia to convince Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin to vote against Kahl but it didn't work as Manchin voted for the nominee despite expressing reservations about Kahl's Iran stance. Read more at i24
