Mid-15th Century Esther Scroll Gifted To National Library Of Israel

Experts say that the mid-15th century scroll was written by a Jewish scribe around 1465

One of the world’s oldest known scrolls from the Book of Esther (megillah of Esther) has been gifted to the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem, the National Library announced on Monday.

The Esther scrolls date back 1465 and scholars believe that they were written by a scribe in the Iberian Peninsula. 

The new addition is “an incredibly rare testament to the rich material culture of the Jews of the Iberian Peninsula,” Dr. Yoel Finkelman, curator of the National Library of Israel’s Haim and Hanna Salomon Judaica Collection, said in a statement. Read more at i24
