Israel’s acting head of the Health Ministry’s public health services Sharon Alroy-Preis on Sunday watered down the prospect of reaching herd immunity through the mass-scale vaccination scheme.

“When you have 2.5 million children who cannot get vaccinated, we will probably not reach herd immunity even if the entire population that can, will get vaccinated,” Alroy-Preis stressed at a parliamentary deliberation in Jerusalem, cited by outlet N12.

The public health official was referencing the inability to inoculate ages 0 to 16 as that age group was not sampled in the clinical trials of the vaccine developing firms such as Pfizer and Moderna.

Alroy-Preis further addressed criticism hurled at the lockdown and some doubts cast over COVID-19 vaccines’ efficiency. “If we thought that after the first dose of the vaccine it would all be different — it is not,” she said as quoted by N12.
