Anti-government protesters in Israel gathered at bridges and intersections across the country on Saturday night for the 32nd consecutive week to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Large-scale demonstrations are also expected to take place in front of the Prime Minister's official residence in Jerusalem and near Netanyahu's private residence in Caesarea.

Protesters have for months demanded Netanyahu's resignation, citing his government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing legal troubles.

"At the height of the health and economic catastrophe, the accused [Netanyahu] takes Israel hostage to postpone his trial and bow to his 'ultra-Orthodox allies,'" the protest organization Black Flag Movement said in a press release before the start of Saturday's rallies.

Netanyahu, who is currently on trial for bribery, fraud, and breach of public trust, denies the allegations of wrongdoing.

Critics of Netanyahu also accuse him of tacitly allowing some ultra-Orthodox communities to flout coronavirus restrictions as not to jeopardize his support among the two religious parties in parliament. Read more at i24
