The Biden administration 'intends to restore US assistance programs' to help the Palestinians

The Palestinian leadership on Wednesday welcomed the decision of the new US administration of President Joe Biden to reopen the offices of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Washington, shuttered by the administration of former President Donald Trump.

Acting US Ambassador to the UN Richard Mills told a Security Council video conference on Tuesday that the Biden administration "intends to restore US assistance programs" to help the Palestinians and "to take steps to reopen the diplomatic missions closed by the last administration."

"The reopening of the consulate for East Jerusalem, that of the PLO's office in Washington and the commitment to a two-state solution are welcome positive signs," said Jibril Rajoub, senior official of the Fatah party.

The Trump administration had ended its funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa), closed the Palestinian representative office in Washington and its consulate general in Jerusalem, which served as a de-facto Palestinian embassy. Read more at i24
