Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will examine the possibility of strengthening Israel's current national lockdown as the country continues to lead the world in per capita vaccinations.

Discussions will focus on imposing "tighter and shorter confinement, which will allow the economy to reopen quickly," according to the statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

Israel began its third national lockdown last Sunday in an effort to curb the rapid spread of the coronavirus, which began exceeding 3,000 daily cases at the start of December.

The measure will be enforced for at least the next two weeks, but most health experts believe that will be extended to the end of January, especially if daily infections remain above 1,000. 

This week, Israel's health ministry further recommended that the government impose additional restrictions on schools, workplaces, and transportation to further lower the rate of coronavirus infection. Read more at i24
