Israel's Coronavirus Czar Warns Lockdown Likely To Be Extended Past Two Weeks

Israel's coronavirus czar warned on Thursday that the country's third national lockdown will likely extend beyond the two weeks originally proposed by the government. 

Prof. Nachman Ash told Army Radio, however, that he was optimistic that this would be the country's last lockdown, set to take effect on Sunday at 5 pm, and would be successfully brought under control by Israel's vaccination drive.  

“Two weeks is too short. I estimate we will need to extend the lockdown,” Ash told the broadcaster, adding “I truly believe this will be our last lockdown.”

Israeli Cabinet Ministers approved the restrictions earlier on Thursday a day after Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister Benny Gantz agreed that a new lockdown was necessary to drive down soaring virus cases. 

The lockdown, starting Sunday at 5 pm for two weeks, will close grades 5 to 10 in Israel's school system, in addition to limiting the other grades. Businesses will also close, except those deemed necessary. Read more at i24
