On the heels of landmark normalization agreements with UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco

Israel established diplomatic ties with the Kingdom of Bhutan on Saturday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced in a statement.

The agreement with the South Asian country comes on the heels of Israel's landmark normalization agreements with United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco, all brokered by the United States.

Bhutan, a majority-Buddhist nation neighboring Israel ally India, is one of the more isolated countries in the world, often seen as keen to guard its cultural heritage from foreign influences. 

The agreement was unveiled days days after Israel's Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi spoke on the phone to his Bhutanese counterpart Tandy Dorji, agreed to cooperate in a range of areas including water management, agriculture and healthcare. Read more at i24
