Government opposition to parliament's proposed bill ignored, as Guardian Council enacts law

Iran's Guardian Council - which is charged with ensuring draft laws do not contradict Shi'ite Islamic laws or Iran's constitution - approved a law Wednesday that obliges the government to halt UN inspections of its nuclear sites.

In addition, the law also enables a significant step up in uranium enrichment beyond the limit set under Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal if sanctions are not eased in a month.

The move implemented in Iran's hardline-dominated parliament comes in the wake of last week's assassination of the country's top nuclear scientist - Mohsen Fakhrizadeh - which Tehran has blamed on Israel.

"Under the new law, Tehran gives one month to the deal's European parties to ease sanctions on Iran's oil and financial sectors, imposed after Washington quit the pact between Tehran and six powers [the United States, Russia, China, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the European Union] in 2018," reported Reuters.
