French Government Restores Public Health State Of Emergency As COVID Cases Climb Alarmingly

The French government declared Wednesday that the country will re-enter a state of emergency with the imposition of nightly curfews in the capital, Paris, as well as other major cities.

The curfews will take effect from Saturday, October 17, and will run daily from 21:00 (19:00 GMT) until 06:00 a.m. the following morning.

The other eight metropolitan areas in addition to Paris that will be under curfew include Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Aix-Marseille, Montpellier, Rouen, St Etienne and Toulouse. The new measures will affect approximately 19 million people.

"In view of its spread on the national territory, the COVID-19 epidemic constitutes a health disaster endangering, by its nature and its seriousness, the health of the population. It justifies that the state of health emergency be declared so that measures strictly proportional to the health risks incurred and appropriate to the circumstances of time and place can be taken," a government report read.
