Rising challenger to current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the upcoming elections, Benny Gantz, is the subject of a civil lawsuit in the Hague that implicates him for the killing of six Gazans during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in 2014 when he served as the army’s chief of staff.

The plaintiff Ismail Ziada is a Dutch citizen born in the Gazan refugee camp of Al Bureij, whose six family members, including his mother and three brothers, were killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) bombing of their family home in Bureij.

The lawsuit charges Gantz and then commander of the Israeli Air Force Amir Eshel with war crimes for the IDF’s systematic failure to comply with the principle of proportionality under international law or taking precautionary measures to mitigate potential harm to civilians in Operation Protective Edge — a responsibility arising from the top level.
