State health officials say three papayas at a Baltimore store tested positive for salmonella, and they're asking consumers to be on the lookout.

Marylanders should avoid eating Caribeña’s yellow, Maradol papayas, which officials say are sold at locations throughout Maryland. If you have them at home, you should throw them out.

The department tested five of the papayas at the Baltimore store as part of an ongoing investigation. The source of the contamination hasn't yet been found, but it could have happened at any point in the supply chain.

Salmonella bacteria can cause diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and fever, usually beginning between 12 and 36 hours after exposure and typically lasting for two to seven days. If you think you're suffering from a Salmonella infection, you should contact your health care provider. The young, seniors and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk.
