Members of the public face NIS 20,000 fines ($6,111) if caught flouting COVID-19 restrictions

Israel is expected to increase fines and ban international travel to members of the public that fail to adhere to coronavirus restrictions in an effort to beat back soaring infection rates in the country.

The government is expected to decide on Monday to dramatically increase fines currently set at NIS 5,000 ($1,528), which mainly target "non-essential" businesses skirting coronavirus restrictions amid the country's current lockdown, according to Hebrew-language broadcaster Channel 13.

According to the channel, educational institutions that open illegally, along with weddings, parties, and other large gatherings will be subjected to fines up to NIS 20,000 ($6,111).

In addition, the Jewish state will no longer allow travelers to enter its territory if they have not taken a coronavirus test 72 hours before their arrival starting Sunday.

Airlines have been told not to allow passengers to board planes bound for Israel without proof of a valid negative test in hand, the channel added.

The government is also reportedly considering a complete halt to flights from some high-risk countries, including the United Arab Emirates, a country with which Israel has only recently established diplomatic relations. Read more at i24
