The COVID-19 vaccine becomes available to more people today, as Maryland enters Phase 1B of its vaccine distribution program.

Starting today people 75 and older will be able to get the vaccine, as will anyone in assisted living or group home settings. The vaccine will also be made available to teachers, school staff and child care providers.

At a news conference last week announcing the expansion, Gov. Larry Hogan stressed that there is a limited vaccine supply and people have to be patient.

Hogan said last week the state had received just 4.5% of the vaccines needed to give each of the state's 6,000,000 residents the required two doses.

"This is going to take a long time, a great deal of patience and a lot more vaccines," Hogan said on Thursday,

As of Sunday, according to the Maryland Department of Health, 21,296 people have received the required first and second doses of the vaccine, which represents 0.35% of the population.  The Department reports 223,740 people have received the first dose.

Until today, the vaccine has only been made available to first responders, nursing home residents and staff.

Hogan, Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford and First Lady Yumi Hogan will each get their first vaccines today at a 9:30 a.m. news conference.

Starting today, hospitals and health departments are directed to open vaccination clinics focused on the elderly. Appointments are required and may be made online. Those who know someone who will be eligible for a vaccine are encouraged to help them sign up. Residents in nursing homes or other congregate care will get vaccinated on-site by clinicians from CVS or Walgreens and do not need to make an appointment.

Starting next Monday Jan. 25, vaccine clinics will be set up in some Giant supermarkets and Walmart stores.Read more at WBAL
