The Dow closed at a new record high Thursday, driven by strong earnings from Caterpillar (CAT) and 3M (MMM).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced about 140 points to 26,393, clinching its second consecutive record close. The S&P 500 was also poised to hit a fresh record, edging 1.8 points higher to 2,839. The Nasdaq Composite was down 3.9 points at 7,411.

Caterpillar and 3M reported quarterly earnings that beat Wall Street’s expectations. 3M rose 1.8%, while Caterpillar swung into negative territory. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Boeing (BA) also led the Dow higher.
