Gov. Larry Hogan cited the state's improved health and economic metrics as the reason, but some state leaders want the governor to reverse that decision.

The governor said this move is necessary for the state's economy recovery as businesses reopen but face a critical hiring shortage. But there is disagreement about whether this is the right time for Maryland to opt-out of the extra jobless benefits.

Wednesday marked the first day of what the Outback Steakhouse calls "a national hiring event." The people running the restaurant on Boston Street in Canton said staffing levels are 25% short of what's typical at this time of year.

"Here in Baltimore City, we're looking for all kinds of positions -- front of house, back of house, servers, line cooks, bartenders," said Heather Merkel, proprietor of Outback Steakhouse in Canton. "I would say we're running at about 75% right now, so we're looking to hire about 10 people."

"Prior to this, I was a musician full time. It was a little hard to find stable employment during the pandemic," said Joey Cambone, 19, a recent hire at the Canton Outback Steakhouse. "A lot of the engagements and stuff that I normally would get -- traveling, gigs and what not -- got canceled or put off for a later date because of the pandemic."

This comes a day after Maryland's Republican governor informed the federal government that the state is opting out of enhanced pandemic unemployment benefits effective July 3, which means the extra $300-a-week payments will end and work search requirements will resume.

Maryland is opting out of the following programs:

- Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), which provides an additional $300 per week

- Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation (MEUC)

- Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC)

- Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA)

So could that help round out the payroll?

"Absolutely. I think people just coming out in person and seeing the environment will make people want to come back to work," Merkel said.

While applauded by some in the business sector, it's a move Democrats in Annapolis are objecting to the move. Read more at WBAL
