Over 53,000 Marylanders and just over 1,500,000 Americans overall filed unemployment insurance benefits claims last week.

FILING FOR UNEMPLOYMENT

A total of 53,464 Maryland residents filed unemployment insurance claims in the week ending June 6, 2020, an increase of 10,369 from the previous week, labor officials report. 

Last week, 43,095 Marylanders filed for unemployment insurance benefits claims with the Maryland Department of Labor Division of Unemployment Insurance amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The week ending May 23, 2020, 48,963 claims were filed overall. 

A total of 51,108 Marylanders filed claims the week ending on May 16, 2020. 

For the week of May 9, 2020, 65,805 filed claims and 109,263 claims the week ending May 2, 2020

The unemployment numbers sharply increased the week ending in May 2 due to expanded filing under the federal CARES Act and the new website implemented by labor officials. 

In the week ending in April 25, 2020, a total of 37,225 Maryland residents filed claims.

The week ending in April 18, 2020, officials said 47,545 residents filed for benefits. The previous week, 61,770 residents filed claims.
