Jerusalem, Israel - June 19, 2022 - On a pleasantly cool June in Jerusalem, Israel evening, the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens served as an ideal venue for the first gala dinner in support of The Michael Levin Base. The Base opened during Purim as the pandemic was hitting its peak with closures and no knowledge on how to contain and handle the Covid-19. In spite of constantly changing regulations, The Base supported lone soldiers and b'not sherut on a regular basis. Volunteers provided support and meals in the new location near the Machane Yehudah Market, going to army bases, or other locations where those quarantined were in need of food and support.

Former Ambassador, former Member of Knesset, and former lone soldier Michael Oren was the guest speaker at the Evening of Celebration. His tales of being a lone soldier forty years ago, when it was not as common as today, are always both entertaining and distressing. Then a young person would come home from the army on Friday afternoon and have to scrounge the closed shuk to find some food for Shabbat. Washing uniforms was a constant challenge, as was having enough hot water to also clean himself for Shabbat.

At The Base, now, not only are there washing machines for lone soldiers to use but if they need, subsidized tolieteries are available, besides a kitchen, and Shabbat and Yom Tov meals and counseling support.

Serving as MC was Lori Palatnik, an educator, who besides being the founding director and force behind Momentum, is the mother of a former lone soldier. Speaking from the heart with her first-hand knowledge of a mother's concern and pride she introduced the honorees and other speakers.

Honorees included Bernie Weinberger, who along with countless projects made the Aron Chodesh at The Base, and former lone soldier Binyamin Zev Rosenstein for their hours of dedication.

Guests heard Samantha Ferszt a former lone soldier from Los Angeles, who now volunteers at The Base, speak of her experiences and hardships. Former lone bat sherut Ellianna Kurtzer also spoke, with special thanks going to Miryam Devora Kurtzer for sharing her experiences as a mother of a lone bat sherut and now active board member.

Chairman of the Board Richard Corman, opened and closed the evening, organized by The Base co-directors Lizzie Noach, Bonnie Holzberg Rosenbaum, and staff Shira Zeev, Ari Wruble, Mayan Khakshoor, Miriam Serkez, Aliza Bloc, and Kiana Brett.

When asked for a show of hands how many in the audience served as lone soldiers, very few former lone soldiers were present. However, when the question was how many had children who served as lone soldiers or b'not sherut, many more hands were raised. As a mother of three former lone soldiers, mine went up, knowing the firsthand experience of the pride, with tears and fears.
