Virus czar says strain now behind half cases, may cause serious illness 30% more often; 40% of cases in kids

Health officials in Israel are becoming increasingly concerned that mutated COVID-19 strains that returning travelers are thought to have brought into the country are hampering efforts to contain the pandemic's outbreak, despite the country's vaccination drive.

The country's coronavirus czar - Prof Nachman Ash - told Radio 103FM that over the past few days information from the UK, where the so-called British variant was first detected, has indicated that the strain causes serious symptoms at a 30-percent higher rate, reported The Times of Israel (TOI).

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently told a Downing Street news conference that preliminary indications show that the new strain could be around 30-percent more deadly.

Ash said officials estimate some 40-50 percent of new daily cases are caused by the British variant. Read more at i24
