This Shabbat, ZAKA Search and Rescue to deploy 32 ambulances nationwide to inform haredim if confirmed coronavirus patients have been located in their neighborhood.

ZAKA volunteers on high alert, ready to respond to any scenario

ZAKA Chairman Yehuda Meshi-Zahav:

“We must listen to Health Ministry directives… not try to be clever and hold mass weddings in secret or prayer gatherings behind closed screens”

Jerusalem, March 19, 2020. ZAKA Search and Rescue, Israel’s premier non-governmental volunteer organization, announced today (Thursday) that it will deploy 32 ZAKA ambulances in haredi (ultra-Orthodox) neighborhoods nationwide this Shabbat, in response to a request from the Israeli Ministry of Health. This, in order to relay information during the Sabbath if someone from the ultra-Orthodox community is identified as being in contact with a confirmed coronoavirus patient and to ensure immediate self-isolation. The operation will be carried out following consultation and in accordance with halachic interpretation by the ZAKA Rabbinical Council.

According to ZAKA Chairman Yehuda Meshi-Zahav, “ZAKA volunteers are at the highest level of alert, ready to respond to any scenario that may unfold. The volunteers, who are deployed across the country, have been specially trained to deal with this crisis, and have been equipped with protective gear and specialist equipment.”

Meshi-Zahav called on the haredi population to carry out the Israeli Ministry of Health instructions related to coronavirus. “This is a true case of pikuach nefesh, where the preservation of human life overrides virtually any other religious rule, as thousands of lives are in danger. Each one of us could be that person who is infecting others, and this could reach thousands.”

“We in the haredi community believe in the concept expressed in the Bible (Deuteronomy 4:15) וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם מְאֹד, לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם, Therefore take good care of yourselves. We should be at the forefront in internalizing Ministry of Health directives and not try to be clever and hold mass weddings in secret or prayer gatherings behind closed screens,” continued Meshi-Zahav. “All the great Torah scholars have decreed that, without doubt, we must observe the instructions of the Ministry of Health. According to the Rabbis’ rulings, it is allowed and incumbent upon us to tell the police about any gathering that is in defiance of these Health Ministry instructions.”

Founded in 1995 by Yehuda Meshi-Zahav, ZAKA with over 3,500 highly-trained volunteers deployed around the country, on call 24/7 to respond to any accident, terror attack or natural disaster immediately, professionally and with the necessary equipment. ZAKA, a civilian volunteer organization with many specialist search and rescue units, has sole responsibility in Israel for dealing with incidents of sudden death and works in close cooperation with the emergency services and security forces.
