A bombardment of 500 rockets and missiles from Gaza into southern Israel caused cancellation of schools, businesses without bomb shelters to shut, plus extensive mental and physical damage.

Today, before "five hours of calm,"  BJL toured Ashkelon, Sderot and Kissufim to see damage from rockets and shrapnel. The day began with a briefing by Foreign Press Spokesman for the Police Micky Rosenfeld in front and inside the Ashkelon building which took a direct hit from a Hamas rocket.

One man died and a woman was seriously injured. While apartments on one side of the hit building were destroyed, other apartments had doors blown open, but as much damage. A building across the pathway had shrapnel marks in the wall. The adjacent synagogue is located downstairs in a community bomb shelter.

Also in Ashkelon, Tzur Zechary's house was damaged by shrapnel from a missile which landed on the roof next door. Broken glass covered his floor from shattered windows, but he and his family were able to get to safety in their family's bomb shelter. Families in the south have stocked their bomb shelters, safe rooms, with food, games, sleeping bags, and essentials. Zechary's young daughter with big eyes and high pitched voice told the Israeli TV interviewer, "I am afraid," as she clutched her stuffed animal

Ashkelon has a population of 150,000. While old buildings do not all have safe rooms, new hirisers by the sea were also affected by missiles landing on the beach.

In Sderot, Magen David Adom (MDA)  Director of International Relations Department  Yonatan Yagodovsky spoke of the dedication and success of MDA over the years and the past hours of extreme stress, where quick response times have been crucial.

Deputy mayor of Sderot Elad Kalimi and Atara Orenbuch, a resident of Sderot were at the site of a burned bakery. Overnight one rocket was intercept by the iron dome, but a piece of shrapnel wreckage hit gas tanks by the bakery. The explosion caused a fire which raged for hours. The resulting physical damage was extensive. Photos and videos cannot share the burnt smell which remained in the air.

The last stop of tour was Kissufim where Benny Hasson, resident and spokesperson of Kissufim, Eshkol Regional Council showed two recent hits and damage from Gaza attacks. Plus Hasson pointed out the mountain Gaza has made by dumping garbage near their border.

Shattered glass, broken trees, damaged buildings, and burnt vehicles, a car with the back window blown away revealing a baby seat inside, were examples of devastating ordeal of the last day.

Ilan Izekson, security officer of Eshkol Regional Council and the army have been working overtime to keep residents as safe as possible under attack from Gaza.

However, going from site to site, I could not marvel how a rocket fell on the ground between buildings, in a hay stack, or field, mini-miracles over and over. With so many rockets and missiles bombarded from Gaza, residents are upset and angry, and want quiet. Staying in shelters certainly saved lives, but some or a few rockets are too many. To have to go through life waiting for the next rocket to fall, the next red alert to sound, is no way to live.

Having suffered from 17 years of attacks from Gaza, confidence is this latest ceasefire is hard to find.

Of note to former Baltimore NCSYers, Sderot Deputy Mayor Elad Kalimi is the son-in-law Judy and Mark Spanglet.
