A French court ruled that Traoré was not fit to stand trial after consuming a large amount of cannabis

A French court confirmed on Wednesday that the alleged murderer of Sarah Halimi, H'yd, a Jewish woman killed in 2017 in Paris, cannot be held criminally responsible for her death because he was in a psychotic state from smoking marijuana. 

The court on Tuesday rejected a complaint lodged by Halimi's family against the decision rendered in 2019 by the Paris Court of Appeal, which declared the young suspect could not be tried after sustaining a "delusional" episode from heavy cannabis consumption.

The court cited three psychological evaluations of Kobili Traoré, 27, while making its decision. 

On April 4, 2017, Traoré broke into the home of his 65-year-old Jewish neighbor, Lucie Attal, also known as Sarah Halimi. 

A police report of the incident claims that Traoré yelled "Allahu Akbar" and recited a number of verses in the Koran before throwing her over the balcony of Belleville apartment, located in the east of Paris.

The case revived controversy over issues of anti-Semitism that would permeate certain working-class districts, sparking further political debate after a Paris court in 2019 ruled that Traoré was not fit to stand trial. Read more at i24
