Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree Friday ordering to hold general elections in Palestinian territories in the coming months.

Under the decree, the elections are set to take place in three stages.

Legislative elections are first on the line, slated for May 22; a presidential election will follow on July 31. The decree sets August 31 as the deadline for establishing the Palestinian National Council.

Palestinians last went to polling stations in a general vote in 2006, which delivered a victory for the Hamas terrorist group and resulted in a spat that saw Abbas’s Fatah driven out of the Gaza Strip.
