Boeing 737 operated by Sriwijaya Air reportedly went off radar, rapidly lost altitude shortly after takeoff

A Boeing 737 passenger jet operated by Sriwijaya Air went off radar shortly after takeoff from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, Flightradar24 reported Saturday.

According to the air traffic monitoring portal, the plane quickly lost altitude, taking a 10,000 dive within one minute.

According to the website, the plane was delivered to its first operator some 26 years ago and joined the Sriwijaya Air fleet in 2012. 

The jet is said to be two generations older than the contentious Boeing 737 MAX, which had two major crashes in recent years.

Early unconfirmed reports in local media suggest the plane plummeted into the sea and fell apart, with images of purported debris circulating on social media. Read more at i24
