Fear that proposed sale will harm Israel's qualitative military edge has alarmed country's defense officials

US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman has weighed in on the proposed sale of his country's F-35 fighter jets to UAE as part of the normalization deal signed earlier in the month between Israel and the Gulf state.

Friedman stated Wednesday that it would likely be "six or seven years" before the Emiratis receive the planes, in addition to the six or seven years they have already been attempting to acquire them, reported The Times of Israel.

The proposed sale was not officially part of the deal, but it is widely understood that the sale of F-35's was contingent upon Abu Dhabi's acceptance of the deal with Jerusalem.

A degree of opacity attached to this issue; Israel's Defense Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz as well as other defense and military officials, said they were kept out of the loop. The defense minister warned that the proposed sale was "not good for Israel." Read more at i24
