A Tennessee immigration judge issued Thursday a deportation order for a 94-year-old state resident over his service as an armed guard at the Neuengamme concentration camp.

Friedrich Karl Berger, a German citizen, has been found to have served “at a Neuengamme sub-camp near Meppen, Germany,” in 1945, the US Justice Department said in a statement. The prisoners he guarded included “Jews, Poles, Russians, Danes, Dutch, Latvians, French, Italians” who were held in “atrocious” conditions and were forced to work till exhaustion or, in many cases, death.

Before the deportation order, Berger ran a business in Tennessee and was still receiving a German pension calculated in the basis of his employment in the country, including ‘wartime service’.
