Jordan’s foreign minister pushed back on Tuesday against Israel’s call for the United States to recognize its sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights, saying that international law clearly considers it “occupied Syrian territory.”

“The Golan Heights are occupied Syrian territory. International law is clear on that. It has to be treated as such,” Ayman Safadi told reporters at a press conference. “Therefore, our position is that Israel needs to withdraw from that territory in the framework of a peace agreement,” he added.

Safadi’s comments came amid reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked US President Donald Trump to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the territory as part of Washington’s decision to pull its troops from Syria.
