While the COVID-19 coronavirus has so far been widely assumed to be mostly dangerous for the elderly, a new study conducted in the UK and published on Tuesday introduced another group of increased risk, with those aged 50 and up facing a higher probability of hospitalization and death.

The study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, confirmed that age was a major factor when it came to the prospect of a patient deteriorating to a serious condition.

While hospitalization rates for those aged over 80 stood at about 20 percent, people in their 50-s and 60-s required it in 8.2 percent of cases, while for patients up to 30 this rate stood only at one percent.

The study was based on a review of over 3,600 cases from China’s Wuhan and accounted for estimates of asymptomatic cases, not confirmed clinically, when calculating the hospitalization rates.
