2,000 handmade Stars of David were hung throughout the US city of Pittsburgh on Saturday in response to the attack at Tree of Life synagogue that left 11 worshippers dead on October 27.

Over 1,000 volunteer crafters from countries around the world contributed to the project, which began when two women — Hinda Mandell and Ellen Dominus Broud — met online and created the Jewish Hearts for Pittsburgh page on Facebook several days after the shooting.

The post office box they set up to collect the stars received mail from 12 countries, including Qatar and New Zealand, and from survivor of the shooting at Columbine High School, and a survivor of the shooting in Aurora, Colorado.
