Jerusalem, Israel - Mar. 9, 2018 - The Eighth International Jerusalem Marathon was held on Friday, March 9, 2018, with a record of more than 35,000 runners competing in various distances, with an all-time high of more than 4,000 runners joining from over 72 countries around the world.

Guest of honor was sporting great Ethiopian distance runner and former two-time Olympic gold medalist and World Champion in long distance running, Haile Gebrselassie. He ran the 10 km race along with Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat.

Gerbrselassie, at a Thursday press conference, said "to come to Jerusalem is dream of everyone.  Sports bring people together." The Mayor presented the retired marathon professional with an official Jerusalem pin, which is a Lion of Judah.

This year a record number of runners supported and raised money for good causes, with tens of thousands of dollars going to zedekkah. Three starts were required to accommodate the more than 11,000 runners in the 10 Kilometer races. Families participated in special family friendly route. Disabled in wheelchairs were pushed by volunteers and friends on the cool and windy Jerusalem morning.

Many major Jerusalem streets were closed to vehicles and pedestrians, but opened in the early afternoon before Shabbos. A street festival was again organized on Emek Refaim Street to entertain families, as many Jerusalem schools were closed with students and teachers unable to attend classes.

The Jerusalem Marathon has grown over the years, bringing more tourists each year.  As a marathon runner, Barkat was instrumental in taking an annual half marathon, and expanding to international and full marathon.

The winning male runner in the Full Marathon was last year’s winner Shadrack Kipkogey  of Kenya who came in at 2:21:26, and crossed the line ahead of Tilahun Wendwesen Damte of Ethiopia who registered at 2:21:55. In third place was Ronald Kimeli Kurgat, also from Kenya with a time of 2:22:12.
