Baltimore, MD -- Ten days after filing as a candidate for the Maryland Senate, J.D. Merrill has raised nearly $65,000. Merrill is a former City Schools teacher and administrator who is running in Maryland’s 41st legislative district.

The report shows 359 contributions, nearly 25% of which came from current or former educators who have invested in Merrill’s vision for a new commitment to public education in Baltimore. The median contribution was $50 and more than half of the contributions were $100 or less, highlighting the grassroots energy behind the campaign.

“We are energized by the hundreds of donors who have invested in our message that we all do better when our schools do better,” Merrill said. “Together, we will bring hardworking and accountable leadership to the 41st district, new leadership that is focused on improving our schools, creating a job-ready workforce, strengthening our communities, and improving government.”

Born and raised in the 41st district, Merrill is a graduate of Baltimore City Public Schools and is a former teacher and administrator in the school system. While teaching at Baltimore City College he led the groundbreaking effort that raised $2.2 million to build a new library and learning center for the school. One year after the new library opened, student achievement on the toughest research assignments at the school increased by 158%. Merrill also served as Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff of Baltimore City Public Schools where he led special projects for the administration.

The Democratic Primary is June 26, 2018. Merrill is the only declared candidate running for State Senate in District 41.
