A 10-inch water main break is snarling traffic Wednesday afternoon on North Charles Street in north Baltimore.

The break was reported in the 4 p.m. hour on North Charles Street between Preston Street and Mount Royal Avenue. The Baltimore Department of Public Works said the impact to traffic on North Charles Street is expected to last into at least Thursday.

DPW officials said they believe the break is limited to the 1300 block North Charles Street.

"Late this afternoon, we got word of a water main break. It's a 10-inch main," DPW spokesman Jeffrey Raymond said. "Unfortunately, it happened right before rush hour, and they're trying to light the monument tonight ... We do have crews on the scene. We're able to turn valves to isolate the outage to just this block. So it's just this block that's without water. Unfortunately, traffic's going to be backed up and won't be able to get through this street until the work is completed."

SkyTeam 11 video showed the break sending water rushing into the street.

A DPW tweet showed crews turning off a valve on Charles Street at Mount Royal Avenue.
