Washington, DC - Jan. 26, 2023 - Since its founding in 2011, National School Choice Week has been designated as the week when supporters of nonpublic education across the country join together to promote educational pluralism and to highlight programs that provide opportunities for all children to attend the school of their choosing.

For 2023, the week of January 22-28 is National School Choice Week, and events and rallies have been taking place in states across the country. On Wednesday in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and nearly a dozen of his congressional colleagues from the U.S. House and Senate joined together with hundreds of DC area nonpublic school students to rally in support of the continued growth of educational options in Washington DC and across the country.

Of particular note, many of the lawmakers mentioned their support of the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) — a bill proposed by U.S. Senators Tim Scott (R, SC) and Bill Cassidy (R, LA.), along with House members Rep. Adrian Smith (R, NE) and Rep. Burgess Owens (R, UT). The ECCA program would provide up to $10 billion in annual tax credits against federal income and corporate taxes for individuals and businesses donating to nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations for K–12 education.

Currently, there are state-funded school choice programs in 31 states, including the BOOST scholarship program in Maryland. There is great hope for the potential passage of the ECCA program in Congress, and for the continued expansion of school choice programs in states across the country.

Agudath Israel's Rabbi Ariel Sadwin commented: "It was great to experience the energy infused by Speaker McCarthy and his colleagues in support of nonpublic school programs. We are indeed hopeful to see the ECCA program become law and have an impact on all states, especially those without adequate school choice offerings. At the same time, we are working extremely hard in Maryland to ensure the continuation and growth of the BOOST program which has been so beneficial to the households of our community.
