Jerusalem, Israel - Sept. 23, 2021 - In Yerushalayim, the large Birkat Cohanim at the Kotel with Israeli Chief Rabbis, for the first time on Sukkot was organized to be held twice, first on September 22, and again on September 23, 2021.

Last year for Pesach there was also a second service, due to the corona limitations to avoid the regular huge crowds of hundreds of thousands crowding into the Old City. The numbers allowed to attend were drastically reduced.

On the second day of Sukkot 5782, the first day of Chol Hamoed in Israel, the crowd was smaller than previous years before pandemic restrictions. Medical units were in place for emergencies as usual. But added were security units in purple vests positioned to hand out masks to those who did not have them before they could enter the areas close to the Kotel.

The large public sukkah at the back of the Kotel Plaza was well used. However, the Plaza area and up the stairs to the Jewish Quarter which were full in past years were much less crowded.

Police were ready by Jaffa Gate for masses of people that did not come, rather people were coming and going all day in and around the Old City. The Mamilla Mall was busy and restaurants with sukkahs had lines waiting to enter.

On the first day of the Birkat Cohanim, former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman received the first aliyah. The dignitaries were not on the ground level near the Kotel stones where fewer Cohanim covered in white were blessing the people than in past years.

The entire service was broadcast live, as the chazan was accompanied by a choir of singers.
