Rivlin expected to give Lapid the next mandate to form a government

The mandate of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a government expires Tuesday at midnight.

According to a report in Israel Hayom, President Reuven Rivlin is expected to give opposition leader, Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid, the next chance to put together a coalition and not Yamina chairman Naftali Bennett.

Netanyahu was given the first opportunity by Rivlin on April 6 to cobble together a coalition after receiving 52 recommendations versus Lapid's 45.

Rivlin also has the option to give Netanyahu an extension to try and form a government or sending the mandate to the Knesset for a 21-day-period after which a fifth round of elections would be called if a government is not formed during that time. Read more at i24
