Number of Jewish casualties in wars and terrorist attacks since 1860 rises to 23,928

Israel's tally of civilians and military war casualties grew by 112 since the previous Memorial Day in 2020, the Defense Ministry reported on Friday.

Out of those, 43 were soldiers and civilians killed, while 69 veterans died due to the wounds they sustained in the line of duty.

The country's total number of people killed in war and terrorist attacks, tallied since 1860, now stands at 23,928, the ministry said.

The tally includes fatalities from various causes, including illness, accidents or suicides.

The release comes ahead of Israel's Memorial Day, commemorating the memory of those killed in wars and victims of terrorism, -- a national holiday when many Israelis usually visit the graves of their close ones.

On Tuesday, sirens will wail across Israel, like on the Holocaust Remembrance Day, setting off a one-minute moment of silence and somber introspection. Read more at i24
