Wednesday overflight makes for sixth show of force involving heavy bomber since November

A US B-52 heavy bomber flew over the Persian Gulf, the US military said on Wednesday, in the sixth such flight since November 2020 -- and the third this year.

The flight, which was also the first to be carried out under US President Joe Biden, was designed to "deter possible aggression," the Pentagon added.

The aircraft took off from the Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and flew over both the Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia, US media report.

Publishing images of the bomber with an escort of Saudi fighter jets, the US Central Command said the flight worked to "showcase the U.S. commitment to regional security."  Read more at i24
