Jerusalem, Israel - Jan. 19, 2021 - On Tuesday evening, January 19, 2021, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, announced the convened Corona Cabinet approved the Prime Minister's and the Health Minister's proposal to extend the current lockdown. The Cabinet decided to extend the general lockdown, according to the existing detailed regulations, by an additional ten days until Sunday, January 31, 2021.

It was also decided to enact two measures to ease restrictions during the coronavirus period. Students without access to remote learning will be able to take exams on university grounds, provided that their number does not exceed 5%. Also, 11th and 12th-grade pupils will be able to take matriculation exams at schools, according to the rules that have been determined.

Important for travelers, the Cabinet also decided that whoever seeks to board a flight to Israel will be required to present the requisite airline personnel with confirmation of a negative PCR coronavirus test that had been carried out during the 72 hours prior to take-off or, alternatively, confirmation of having been vaccinated or of having recovered that has been issued by the Health Ministry. This procedure will apply to travelers who were outside Israel for 72 hours or more, except for special permits that have been individually approved, and to aircrew members who will be in Israel for 72 hours or more. This regulation will take effect at 00:00 on Saturday, 23 January 2021.

During this lockdown period most stories are closed, shopping malls deserted, and students home from their schools. Plus restrictions on distance allowed from home.

However, protests are allowed. Anti-government protests have been held in many parts of the country, but most of the anti-Netanyahu protesters have been based in Jerusalem. For months protesters have started arriving near France Square on Shabbat, with larger numbers arriving after, making noise past the 11:00 pm noise restricted time in the area near the Israeli Prime Minister's Residence.

Rain or shine, hot or cold, they move into the street and various corners with flags and signs. Large encampments are on most of the length of the sidewalk across from Paris Fountain and in Independence Park. Security barriers are to be found on a growing number of corners in the Talbiyah and Rechavia neighborhoods.
