The Palestinian Authority (PA) will officially ask Israel to to allow residents of East Jerusalem to participate in the Palestinian general elections this spring, PA Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said on Monday.

Shtayyeh said the PA would file an official request with Israel to allow East Jerusalem residents to vote and run in the elections.

"Israel has declared that it remains committed to the agreements signed with the Palestinians," said Shtayyeh, referring to a recent letter from General Kamil Abu Rukun, head of the Unit for the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT).

The letter was sent to Hussein al-Sheikh, head of the Palestinian General Civil Affairs Authority, in November 2020.

In the letter, Abu Rukun asserted that Israel is still committed to respecting the agreements with the Palestinians. Read more at i24
